Principles of Valve Design

Depending on size, THERMOREG thermostatic valves contain 1 to 8 thermostatic elements. In the unusual event of an element failure, the remaining elements will still provide control with only a small change in operating temperature. Normally, manual override mechanism is unnecessary. However, to meet marine classification society rules, we can offer THERMOREG valves fitted with our simple to operate positive action manual override mechanism.

THERMOREG valves are fully automatic, direct operated, proportional action, temperature controllers, with a narrow operating band for accuracy. The operating band is preset at the factory and is approximately 8ºC-11ºC from the point of opening to full open.

A wide choice of temperature ranges are shown on the specific valve leaflets. To change a valve setting, it is necessary to fit a different range thermostatic element. In the cold position ports 1 and 2 are connected and port 3 is closed, the recirculating via the by-pass (port 2) results in the rapid warm-up of the engine to its optimum temperature. As soon as the lower point of the operating band is reached, the sliding valve starts to open gradually, connecting port 3 to port 1 whilst simultaneously port 2 is closed proportionately. Pressure drop through the valve remains constant. In the hot position, port 3 is fully open and port 2 is fully closed. Under normal operating conditions, the valve reaches thermal balance between the cold and hot positions.

Replacement Elements

When necessary replacement of thermoreg thermostatic elements can easily be carried out by separating the valve body parts and removing the element. It is recommended that the 'O' ring seals and housing gaskets where used are replaced at the same time. Standard 'O' rings are manufactured from nitrile rubber but alternative materials such as viton are available for special applications. It should be noted that our thermostatic assemblies are interchangeable with some other manufacturers models. Advice should be sought from our sales team.
